I am an emerging figurative portrait artist, fascinated by feelings and emotions, and by expressing them through line and colour.

I hunt for private moments of bonding between two or more figures, whether in a simple conversation or an everyday activity. Many of these moments involve children, so I take photographs as reference for shape and form. But the emotion matters most: I carry in my memory, draw from that feeling, and then trust the pencil to do the work. I can see beauty in anything, and this is how ordinary people become the heroes of my work.

 

I begin with rough lines across a wooden panel, then crosshatch over them with hundreds of coloured pencils from my collection. Each line tries to capture the likeness of the figure but, above all, the emotions between them. Layer by layer, the figures emerge from a haze of colour, soft at the edges, the way a feeling does.

 

Crosshatching became my way of breaking free from everything that held me back. and each layered mark counts a moment of time. The panel's uneven grain and natural stains become part of the image, considered from the very first mark.
